Energy expenditure in triathlon is highly variable and discipline-dependent—the more efficient your technique across swimming, cycling, and running, the less energy you expend. Environmental factors such as wind, terrain, and water conditions can also significantly impact energy usage. Here is a calculator that can help estimate your caloric burn for each segment. But note that using things like indirect calorimetry (breathing analysis) the actual energy you burn is also affected by your efficiency. The more efficient one is metabolically, or performance wise (work to performance), the less energy they will need at same effort.
